With the dredging of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the inland river transport industry in cities along the Yangtze River has also developed. Jining City is the largest coal production base in Shandong Province. In 2009, the output of raw coal reached 81150,000 tons, accounting for 56.4% of the total coal output in the province, ranking third in the country. 80% of the coal exported from Jining and 60% of the yellow sand used for construction are completed by water route to Jining Port. As one of the 28 major inland river hub ports in China, Jining Port has played the role of transporting coal from the north to the south.

Jining Sendamei Port was invested and built by Malaysia Sendamei Group in 2008. At present, there are four operation areas, mainly engaged in the loading, unloading and storage of bulk cargo, groceries and containers. It is the largest port for bulk cargo, groceries, containers and liquefied products in Shandong Province.
