The orchestra recruits students who are good at symphony instruments from grade five in primary school and grade one to grade two in junior high school. The Symphony Orchestra of Nanyang Demonstration Middle School of Shanghai Student Art Troupe was established in August 1992. It is the backbone team of Shanghai Student Art Troupe under the leadership of Shanghai Education Commission.

Cao Peng, a famous conductor, is the artistic director and chief conductor of the orchestra. Professors from Conservatory of Music and senior performers from Shanghai Professional Orchestra hired professional instructors for the orchestra. Strict training and guidance, as well as numerous performances and competition practices, have created the quasi-professional level of the orchestra and achieved impressive results in major performance competitions at home and abroad.
