Xuzhou, referred to as Xu, was called Pengcheng in ancient times. It is a prefecture-level city in Jiangsu Province. It is located in the northwest of Jiangsu Province, the southeast of the North China Plain, the north wing of the Yangtze River Delta, with Weishan Lake to the north, Xiao County to the west, and Xiao County to the east. It is adjacent to Lianyungang, connected to Suqian in the south, with the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal running through it, and the Longhai and Beijing-Shanghai railway lines intersecting in Xuzhou, known as the "thorough of five provinces". Xuzhou is an important gateway city in East China, an important science, education, culture, finance, tourism, medical, and convention and exhibition center in East China. It is also an important economic, commercial and foreign trade center in Jiangsu Province.

Xuzhou is located in the southeast of the North China Plain, between 116°22′~118°40′ east longitude and 33°43′~34°58′ north latitude. It is about 210 kilometers long from east to west and 140 kilometers wide from north to south.

According to statistics from the sixth census, there are 47 ethnic minorities in Xuzhou, with a minority population of 20,268, accounting for 0.02 of the total population of Xuzhou. Popular opera types in Xuzhou include Liuqin Opera, Jiangsu Bangzi Opera, Hui Opera, Peking Opera, Liuzi Opera, Huagu Opera, Siping Diao, Dingding Opera, Shadow Play, Ping Opera, and Drama. Among them, Liuqin Opera has a history of about 200 years, and Jiangsu Bangzi Opera has a history of 300 years. Xuzhou's local operas and folk dances have the high-pitched, fierce, rough, and simple style of the north, as well as the euphemistic, lyrical, delicate, and beautiful characteristics of the south.
