What are the employment directions of English education majors?

Beijing, in particular, is short of manpower, so employers have no choice but to set up various minefields. Even if you avoid some of them, you will step on another part, and everyone is helpless.

You can say that English majors have a wide range of employment, or you can say that there is no major at all, mainly depending on what you want to do.

English major is mainly translation (including professional translation and interpretation, including foreign affairs staff of various ministries and institutions, including internal translation, etc.). ), editorial reporters (English editors of publishing houses, newspapers, TV stations and websites) and teachers (especially high school and university teachers). This kind of work requires a high level of language. In addition, some require certain translation ability (yes, language ability is not equal to translation ability, and I will paste his face if anyone says to learn English), while others require academic research ability.

Using English as a tool includes a series of occupations with other industry backgrounds, such as foreign trade, finance, law and tourism. The most intuitive thing is that Jin Liqun, president of AIIB, and Xue Hanqin, the first female judge of the United Nations International Court of Justice from China, are all our alumni, and others may not be able to do well (it is said that on the seal of old Jin Man himself, AIIB = interpretation invented the bank, and I am also drunk.

Therefore, the employment of English majors can be very wide, but if you only know English listening, speaking, reading and writing, have no industry knowledge, and have no translation ability, and only have an TEM-8 certificate (and the TEM-8 pass rate is not 100%), you really can't be regarded as a major with you in the job market when looking for a job.

As far as the reality is concerned, most students who work directly engage in the second job after graduation. I majored in English translation as an undergraduate, and we all received some professional training in oral translation (the interpreters we caught up with were also excellent, and they trained not students, but future professional translators), but when I graduated, I found that few people were engaged in the first kind of work except those who were admitted to civil servants in foreign affairs units such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. The main reason is very simple, employers basically regard master's degree as the most basic threshold. Indeed, for those jobs, undergraduate basic and skills training is really not enough.

By the time graduate students graduate, most people have found their first job. However, it should be noted that here, the situation of language colleges and non-language colleges I mentioned earlier, the situation of 2 1 1 and non-2 1 1, the situation of students in Beijing and outside Beijing, and even the differences between male and female students are becoming more and more obvious. College discrimination, undergraduate background, gender discrimination, geographical discrimination. I am very lucky. When I took the postgraduate entrance examination, I flew low and got into my current direction, which shows that I have a skill. Undergraduate and graduate students are both 2 1 1 language colleges, and there are CATTI secondary translators and secondary interpreters, which can help me avoid some discrimination, but I have never published a paper (if I learn this direction, publishing a paper will become a cloud). I'm not from Beijing and I'm not a boy. Therefore, it is possible that graduate students who transfer to other research fields of English majors and graduate students who transfer to other universities will face other minefields, and the situation is not very consistent. To put it bluntly, there are so many first-class jobs. How many translators can an ordinary unit need? When applying for a job, most people are the denominator, and the unit has no energy to pick one by one, so it has to set hard conditions. If you can't find the first job, you can do the second job. Personally, it doesn't make much difference whether candidates graduate from English major or graduate school. Sometimes, graduate students are even regarded as a disadvantage by the unit.

Therefore, as someone said above, if you only know some grammar and vocabulary of optical language, you will fail. Think about what to do first if you want to take the first job, go to the top professional school to take the postgraduate entrance examination, cultivate your translation ability, accumulate more translation experience and increase more background knowledge, all in order to get yourself into the job market and avoid several minefields. Gender and place of origin are beyond our control. If we can avoid other minefields as much as possible, there will be many more choices. Besides, gender and place of origin are definitely not the most important things for rational employers. There are several recruitment plans this year that give priority to boys, and in the end, they all want excellent girls. If you want to engage in the second job, you can take a double degree or take a postgraduate course. In short, it is necessary to be hard while the iron is hot. If you are strong, there will be more doors that can be pushed open.
