The music major of the School of Arts of East China Normal University had strong strength in the 1950s. The music subject has the highest level of subject leaders in the country and a young and progressive teaching staff with profound knowledge, high professional standards. Nearly 80% of the existing teachers have returned from famous foreign music conservatories such as Germany, Austria, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. The rest of the teachers have graduated from first-class domestic music professional colleges such as Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Central Conservatory of Music.
The Department of Music currently has two directions: music performance and music education. The music performance direction recruits undergraduate students in three categories: piano performance, vocal performance, and orchestral performance. Among the training goals of the musicology major, students are required to learn and master the professional knowledge and skills required by music teachers, and at the same time, use strict professional training to cultivate high-level artists. In terms of professional teaching, we insist on one-on-one small class teaching for every student, regardless of major or minor, to ensure the quality of high-level talent cultivation. The music discipline has close cooperation with world-renowned universities such as the University of Music, Performance and Art in Vienna, Austria, the University of Memphis in the United States, the University of Arkansas State Central in the United States, the University of Colorado in the United States, and the Education University of Hong Kong. In recent years, many students have been sent abroad to study abroad every year. .
The Department of Music has trained a large number of high-level music teachers in recent years. They shoulder the important task of backbone music teachers in colleges and universities and various schools, and have trained a large number of professional actors, performers and teachers in concert halls and High-level music workers working in major theaters and international music groups. The high-quality teaching of music majors in cultivating high-level talents has been widely recognized by the music education community and all walks of life. The music major now has a high-level symphony orchestra, which has performed operas and symphonies in Austria and the United States many times.
The Department of Music has a master's degree program in musicology and a doctoral program in music, art and linguistics. It recruits graduate students in the fields of piano art, vocal art, conducting art, flute performance, violin performance, Western music history, music education, etc., and recruits doctoral students in piano art research and conducting art research. It also houses the East China Normal University Symphony Orchestra and the East China Normal University Opera Experimental Center.
The East China Normal University Symphony Orchestra was established in 2002 and officially established in 2006. Professor Hou Runyu serves as the permanent conductor. After several years of development, it is now an orchestra with more than 100 performers. It is a double-pipe orchestra whose members are all young teachers and undergraduate students from the Music Department of the Art Institute. He has performed many times in Shanghai and other cities across the country, and has accumulated a large number of performances and rich stage experience. In September 2007, the orchestra successfully held its first performance at the Shanghai Concert Hall and received high praise from all walks of life. In February 2008, a 55-member orchestra went to the United States and performed works with Chinese characteristics such as "Spring Festival Overture" and "Moonlight Night on the Spring River". They also collaborated with the Arkansas State University Central University and the University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra to collaborate on Western masterpieces. It caused great repercussions locally. In April 2009, the orchestra also held a unique concerto concert at the Shanghai Concert Hall. The East China Normal University Symphony Orchestra has produced a number of outstanding musical talents. Its students have successively become members of the Asian Youth Orchestra, Shanghai Opera House Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and other Chinese and foreign orchestras, making important contributions to the development of music disciplines.
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, in January 2007, the School of Arts of East China Normal University and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, collaborated to perform Mozart’s opera "The Gardener" at the Sch?nbrunn Palace Theater in Vienna, Austria. "Girl", with the East China Normal University Symphony Orchestra as the accompaniment, was a great success and pioneered the first collaboration between a domestic university and a well-known foreign art school to perform an opera. In December 2008, the Opera Experimental Center of East China Normal University was officially established and an unveiling ceremony was held, with the purpose of cultivating opera performance talents, promoting vocal music teaching and research, deepening school aesthetic education, and popularizing Chinese and foreign opera art. Mr. Hou Runyu, a tenured professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Arts of East China Normal University, serves as the artistic director, and Professor Cao Jin serves as the artistic director. Many experts and professors from abroad are hired to rehearse the plays. On November 27th and 28th, 2009, the Opera Experimental Center will also work with the symphony orchestra, teachers and students from Europe and the United States to perform Italian composer Puccini's classic opera "Gianni Schicchi" and an American composer at the Oriental Art Center Menotti's modern opera "The Telephone".
In April 2010, some teachers and students from the Opera Center also went to the United States to perform cooperative exchanges with Colorado State University and the University of Delaware.
In 2010, in order to meet the needs of "art studies" being upgraded to a first-level discipline, East China Normal University restored the structure of the Department of Music. Students majoring in piano performance aim to cultivate high-level piano performance talents and pay attention to the cultivation of their stage performance abilities in teaching. In addition to possessing high-level piano solo skills and techniques, students can broaden their horizons, enrich their performance repertoire, master a variety of music styles and forms, and improve their abilities in chamber music performance. Piano major: Piano lessons are an important professional basic course for music students. The Piano Teaching and Research Office undertakes the piano teaching tasks for all students majoring in music education and music performance in the Department of Music. Professional courses such as piano performance, piano improvisational accompaniment, piano chamber music and double piano are provided for students. In teaching, a teaching model is implemented that combines "one-to-one small class teaching", "classroom lectures", "skills training" and "stage performance practice". Most of the teachers come from the United States, Russia, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and other countries with PhDs and master's degrees who have returned from studying abroad. They undertake piano teaching tasks for all music education and music performance students in the Department of Music. Professional courses such as piano performance, piano improvisational accompaniment, piano chamber music and double piano are provided for students. The teaching philosophy of the Piano Teaching and Research Section is to cultivate music education talents and piano performance talents with a solid professional foundation, high musical literacy, and comprehensive artistic accomplishment. While cultivating students' proficiency in basic piano skills, they can also improve their musical expression and artistic creativity.
