Virtue School: An Eternal Cultural Symbol

In early autumn, I visited all the virtue schools in Laoting County, which is the only vestige of businessmen in Tangshan. Surrounded by beautiful farmhouses, this seemingly ordinary rural primary school is slightly depressed, but when you open the creaking fence door, you will see a tall building with a combination of Chinese and western culture and a courtyard full of pines and cypresses, which makes people involuntarily think of its past glory.

When it comes to Zhude School, we can't forget the name Wu Baixiang. The farmer's son was born in Hexinzhuang Village, Yangezhuang Town, Laoting County. At the age of 13, he followed his uncle to the Northeast to make a living. Apprentice for 7 years, the hardships of society made him feel the pain of being uneducated. So, he vowed that if he made a fortune, he must run a first-class school in his hometown, recruit first-class teachers, let the children receive first-class education and let them all make a difference.

Since the establishment of Tongji in18th century, Wu Baixiang has devoted his life to the management of Tongji. He creatively absorbed western management experience, took the lead in carrying out a series of commercial reforms in Tongji, advocated "no two prices", implemented "clearly marked prices", organized joint-stock companies and became a powerful national capitalist. Wu Baixiang did not forget the oath of the year. 1928, he and his friend Zhao Chantang jointly invested 654.38+million yuan to establish Quande School, the school with the most complete equipment, the largest area and the best conditions in Laoting County at that time, in his hometown of Hexinzhuang. The establishment of Quande School caused a sensation in Laoting County, and Wu Baixiang's enthusiastic education also spread throughout the whole customs.

Today, although the school's most complete auditorium has been baptized for 85 years, the traditional cornice tiles, stone pedestals and European doors and windows in the building are quaint and elegant. Being in it still makes people feel that the dust of history is approaching. It is said that the auditorium can accommodate thousands of people, and teachers and students will hold daily morning meetings, weekly meetings and singing activities here. At that time, the children's library in the north of the auditorium had more than 10,000 books, including novels, poems, stories and popular science books, as well as the most influential large-scale modern series Universal Library in the first half of the 20th century. Regrettably, almost all these precious books were lost in those years.

"cultural heritage" passed down from generation to generation

"To the north of Bohai Sea and to the east of Yanji, the ocean is fertile, and all the virtues of our school are located in it ..." In Quande School, students have to learn to sing the school song of Quande School as soon as they enter school, and this tradition has been inherited to this day. Song Yujin, the current headmaster, was proud of our serious expression when we performed the school song. According to Song Yujin, in the early days of running a school, Wu Baixiang personally wrote the school motto and school song of "Diligence, Simplicity, Integrity and Courage" for the school, so as to encourage teachers and students to study hard and become pillars of society.

It is understood that from 1929 to 1932, Quande School has developed into a co-educational primary school with more than 700 students at most, including rich children in nearby villages and other places inside and outside the county. 1937, in order to solve the difficulties of students in coastal rural areas, Wu Baixiang also hired teachers in three branches of Damiaozhuang, Duowa and Qijiasi, and made teaching plans in various German schools. According to the data, from 1929 to 1945, more than 100 students entered middle schools and universities from various virtue schools, which trained a large number of outstanding talents for the society, including medical experts, senior engineers, scholars and professors, and senior cadres of party and government organs. These students with both ability and political integrity have played an active role in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the War of Liberation and the socialist revolutionary construction.

Wealth will eventually be forgotten, but the spirit will last forever. The "Lao Dai Business Group" represented by Wu Baixiang not only invested in education, but more importantly, it continued a good style of writing and study in his hometown. Yu Shumin, the headmaster of Quande School, is a native of He Xinzhuang village. He spent the whole primary school in Quande School. After graduation from Changli Teachers College 1992, I have been teaching at my alma mater. Yu Shumin said that under the influence of the trend of promoting learning and educating people, the village attaches great importance to the cultural education of the next generation, and almost every family has college students. Take his home as an example. He has 20 uncles, brothers and sisters, among whom 13 was admitted to various universities. Even if the young people in the village did not enter colleges and universities, they actively participated in agricultural production, commodity circulation, enterprise management and other fields based on a good cultural foundation, and many of them were outstanding.

As the only remaining vestige of businessmen in Tangshan, Quande School is a representative building where a large number of businessmen returned to their hometowns in the early 20th century and set off a wave of donations to run schools. However, due to historical and natural reasons, especially in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, the building facilities of the school site were seriously damaged. Although it has been repaired to a certain extent, it has lost its former majesty. Moreover, the school has been renamed Anti-Japanese Middle School and Hexinzhuang Primary School.

On this basis, it is integrated into modern teaching facilities to meet the needs of modern teaching. At the same time, it is organically combined with tourism and ideological and moral construction of minors to ensure the maximization of social benefits.
