Xiangxiang Dongshan Academy is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Dongshan Academy in Xiangxiang is the first stop for Mao Zedong to get out of Shaoshan, learn inspirational lessons and serve the country when he grows up.

Dongshan Academy was founded in Xiangxiang County by former Xiang generals, Xinjiang governors Liu Jintang, Xu Shisui and Huang Guangfu in the 21st year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (1895), and was built in the 26th year of Guangxu (1900), with a scale of more than 60 main halls, east and west halls. The word "Dongshan Academy" in front of the Academy was written by Huang Ziyuan, the second-ranked great calligrapher in Qing Dynasty.

Academy architecture has typical cultural characteristics of Huxiang Academy, and its layout embodies the Confucian thought of "complementary ceremony and music". It adopts a spatial combination of symmetrical central axis, multiple courtyards, front and back series and layers of depth, giving people a deep and quiet feeling. In terms of decoration, it is not gorgeous, with blue bricks and tiles, without piled decoration and imaginary momentum, showing the characteristics of dignity, simplicity, tranquility and elegance. At the same time, the architecture of the academy incorporates the architectural features of local temples and western architectural styles, such as enclosing walls, encircling rivers, decorating with walls, erecting stone bridges, matching pavilions and setting patios, which all reflect traditional architectural practices. The two gates in and out of the Academy were also built in the position of "Gankun" according to Wen Wang's Eight Diagrams, which means that students who leave Dongshan Academy will make great achievements and have a great impact on Gankun. The design of two-story building with balcony, tall lattice glass windows and large classroom has obviously absorbed the style of western architecture.

Academy is the product of China people's salvation after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. It follows the principle of seeking truth from facts and being flexible actively, upholds the motto of "honesty and diligence" and the concepts of "teaching by selecting the best", "abolishing the imperial examination and promoting new learning", breaks the traditional mode of reading classics in academies, breaks away from the track of imperial examination promotion, and sets up four camps of arithmetic, intelligence, dialect and business to train professional and practical talents in different disciplines. During the Republic of China, the first China Education Yearbook of the Ministry of Education once praised Dongshan Academy, which played a positive role in the reform of Hunan Province. Its school-running direction of "training practical talents to meet the urgent needs of the times" has also set a model for modern education and has a wide social impact.

Since its establishment, the institute has trained tens of thousands of outstanding talents such as founding leaders, generals and scholars of the Republic of China. Outstanding alumni include the president, Xiao San, an internationally renowned poet and translator, Yi, a member of the Standing Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Xiao Zisheng, one of the founders of Xinmin Society, General Chen Geng and Tan Zheng of China People's Liberation Army, Yang, Secretary of Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and Minister of Military Commission, and Mao Zetan and Liu Zongtao, commanders of Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi Military Region. On the centennial anniversary of Dongshan School, the State Education Commission sent a congratulatory message, praising "Dongshan School has made a special contribution to the China Revolution".

The College was renamed after Dongshan Senior Primary School Hall in the county, Dongshan Junior Middle School in the province, Dongshan Primary School in the province and Dongshan School in the province. 1September 1958 10, President Mao Zedong wrote the name of Dongshan School for his alma mater. -In 2003, Dongshan School reiterated its motto of "Honesty and Diligence".
