The main and characteristic research directions of chemical technology discipline are: coal science foundation, gas purification and adsorption engineering, carbon chemistry and chemical engineering, plasma reaction technology and new catalytic materials. A series of achievements have been made in coal microstructure and pyrolysis gasification characteristics, coal gasification kinetics, coal-based synthesis gas conversion, effective utilization of coalbed methane, and new catalytic materials for coal conversion. The laboratory covers an area of about 6,800 square meters (including the test base of 2,000 square meters) and has more than 20 modern test and analysis instruments such as XRD, Py-FTIR, TG/DTA, GC/MS, LC/MS, UV/Vis, ion chromatography, elemental analyzer, mercury intrusion analyzer, surface adsorption instrument, electronic universal testing machine, particle size analyzer and polarizing microscope. , and large computing workstations and instruments. At present, the laboratory undertakes more than 60 national key basic research planning projects, 973 pre-research projects, key funds of the National Natural Science Foundation, key projects of major western plans, national and provincial natural science funds and key projects, with a total funding of nearly 30 million yuan.

As the only discipline in domestic universities with coal science and technology as its main research direction, it has hosted the national Chinese core periodical "Coal Transformation" since 1989, which was published by Science Press and included in various abstracts and indexes at home and abroad. The discipline has always maintained the leading research direction and level in the world, and established extensive academic contacts and exchanges with academic institutions at home and abroad. Internationally renowned scholars such as J. M. McCarty (SRIINT University), R.Kandiyoti (Imperial College), W.P.Pan (W KU University) and K.H.VanHeek (DMT University) are all part-time professors in the laboratory.
