The first SOS Children's Village in China was established in 1984. Over the past ten years, with the kind care of the China Municipal Government and the enthusiastic help of international SOS Children's Villages, especially with the strong support of Dr. Hermann Gmeiner, the founder, and Mr. Helmut Kutin, the current chairman, the cause of SOS Children's Villages in China has made great progress. At present, nine SOS children's villages have been established in Tianjin, Yantai, Qiqihar, Nanchang, Kaifeng, Chengdu, Putian, Urumqi and Lhasa. In addition, Yantai and Qiqihar have established two schools named after Dr. Hermann Gmeiner. SOS Children's Village in Beijing will be completed and opened in 2008. SOS Children's Village in China is in charge of the national civil affairs department. As a social welfare institution to help social orphans, orphans are raised by their families. There are 12- 18 families in each children's village, and each family consists of a mother and 7-8 children recruited according to strict conditions.
