How to pay social security when working abroad?

Foreigners working in China need to pay social security.

According to the Interim Measures for the Participation in Social Insurance of Foreigners Employed in China published by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security on September 6, 2011, foreigners who are directly employed by employers in China, and foreigners who are dispatched to branches and representative offices in China (hereinafter referred to as "in-country work units") after entering into an employment contract with an employer abroad will participate in basic employee pension insurance, basic employee medical insurance, work injury insurance, unemployment insurance, and so on. Foreigners who are employed by an employer in China, as well as foreigners who are dispatched to a branch office or representative office in China (hereinafter referred to as "domestic work unit") after entering into an employment contract with an overseas employer, will participate in the basic employees' pension insurance, basic employees' medical insurance, work injury insurance, unemployment insurance and maternity insurance.

The social insurance fees are paid by the foreigner and the employer in China (or the domestic work unit) in accordance with the relevant regulations***. However, if a person with the nationality of a country that has signed a bilateral or multilateral agreement on social insurance with China is employed in China, his or her participation in social insurance shall be handled in accordance with the provisions of the agreement.
