Two main ways for foreigners to pay social security in Shanghai;

1. Insure through the employer: the employer in Shanghai needs to pay social security for its employees within 30 days of their employment. No matter where their household registration is, as long as they are employed, they can successfully pay social security and enjoy relevant protection.

2. Insure as a flexible employee: For foreigners who are unemployed or start businesses, they can choose to pay social security as a flexible employee. Whether registered in Shanghai or registered in other provinces and cities, as long as they meet the conditions, they can pay social security by themselves.

Note: Shanghai Flexible Employment Social Security requires higher insurance materials, so it is necessary to prepare employment registration certificates, identity documents and other materials that may be needed. For the first time, you need to provide additional materials, including a copy of the first page of the household registration book and a copy of your information page (or household registration certificate). If you are a foreign nurse in a hospital, you need to submit your own written application.
