Articles 10 and 23 of the Social Insurance Law of People's Republic of China (PRC) (1) mention that basic old-age insurance and basic medical insurance can be purchased in the name of companies, and individuals can apply to social security agencies for purchase.

Individual industrial and commercial households without employees, part-time employees who have not participated in the basic old-age insurance in the employer and other flexible employees can participate in the basic old-age insurance and basic medical insurance, and individuals pay the old-age insurance and basic medical insurance premiums in accordance with state regulations.

Two, during the period of personal resignation, unable to participate in work-related injury, unemployment and maternity insurance.

According to the provisions of Article 33, Article 44, Article 45 and Article 53, paragraph 2 of the Social Insurance Law of People's Republic of China (PRC), it can be understood that work-related injury, unemployment and maternity insurance are mainly purchased by units, and individuals cannot take out insurance separately:

(1) Work-related injury insurance. Employers pay work-related injury insurance premiums, while employees do not pay work-related injury insurance premiums.

(2) Unemployment insurance and unemployment insurance premiums shall be paid jointly by employers and employees in accordance with state regulations.

(three) maternity insurance, maternity insurance premiums paid by the employer in accordance with state regulations, employees do not pay maternity insurance premiums.

Three, the city's individual industrial and commercial households without employees, part-time employees who have not participated in the basic old-age insurance in the employer and other flexible employees can apply for insurance in the corresponding institutions according to local policies.

Take self-employed workers and freelancers in Beijing to participate in social insurance as an example;

If an individual entrusts an archivist to be laid off, he/she must also present the Agreement on Laid-off Workers' Self-employment (one original and one copy each) and the Laid-off Waiting Certificate (one copy);

2. Individual industrial and commercial households and the urban workers employed by them must produce the business license of individual workshops (original and photocopy 1 copy) and a copy of the license, resident ID card or household registration book, and employment registration card of urban workers in Beijing (photocopy 1 copy). If individual industrial and commercial households are laid off, they must also produce the Agreement on Self-employment of Laid-off Workers and the Laid-off Waiting Certificate;

3. Freelancers need to show their resident ID card, household registration book and written labor service agreement signed with the current employment unit (original and photocopy 1 copy).

4. Foreign employees who need to buy social insurance after leaving their jobs can only take their ID cards to local social security agencies, employment centers or street (town) labor departments to participate in social insurance.

According to personal experience, individuals in most areas cannot pay directly through social security agencies. If employees need to purchase social security, they can only choose to join the local social security agency, employment center or street (town) labor department, and they need to provide the original ID card of the insured.
