The difference between CET-4 and TOEFL IELTS

There are three main differences between CET-4 and TOEFL IELTS: the content of the test, the nature of the test and the applicable population. Please see the detailed explanation below.

First, the exam content is different:

CET-4 and CET-6 include writing, listening (short stories, long dialogues, listening chapters and lectures), reading comprehension (vocabulary comprehension, long reading and careful reading) and translation (Chinese-English translation, paragraph translation). The IELTS TOEFL test includes listening, reading, writing and speaking. Compared with IELTS and TOEFL, CET-4 and CET-6 have no oral test content, and domestic students have strong basic English ability, but weak practical application ability. Therefore, even those students who have achieved good results in CET-4 and CET-6 need to study systematically and comprehensively to prepare for IELTS, so as to improve their English application ability and the overall level of IELTS.

Second, the nature of the exam is different:

CET-4 and CET-6 are aimed at domestic college students, mainly to assess their comprehensive English level. Freshman takes CET-4 and sophomore takes CET-6.

IELTS is an international English proficiency test, which is suitable for studying abroad, emigrating, job hunting and other groups. TOEFL is also an international English proficiency test, which has the same scope of application as IELTS, but has different degrees of recognition in different countries. IELTS is more suitable for Commonwealth countries, while TOEFL is highly recognized in Europe and America.

Third, the applicable population is different:

CET-4 and CET-6 are suitable for domestic college students. All full-time universities will take CET-4 and CET-6, mainly to test the comprehensive English level of domestic college students.

IELTS and TOEFL are both language proficiency tests for studying abroad, which are suitable for international students, immigrants, job seekers and other groups.
