Why do Canadian students and immigrants look down on each other?
Questioning everything is a good academic attitude, but it is not suitable for life.
What's more, many times, as long as you think from the other side's point of view, many things are not so unreasonable and difficult to understand. I know it's so vulgar, you don't know how many times you've watched it. But it really works. The most vulgar words, which are repeated the most times, are always useful (such as self-consolation or self-deception, but this is not what I want to say today).
When I was a small immigrant in high school in Toronto, I came into contact with children who immigrated with their parents like me. Some of their families are very powerful, but most of them are intellectual families like me, and they are from skilled immigrants. They are thrifty, they work hard, they are diligent, and they are equally annoying. At that time, I especially despised them. I think they are weak. When laughed at or ridiculed by some inexplicable people, they never know how to protect themselves, just stand up and say nothing. I think they are too complacent. They are with people like themselves every day and never dare to step out of their own small circle. Because of this, many people's English has always been average. I always thought I was smart, so I didn't like playing with them. They don't like playing with me either. They think I'm too ostentatious
Later I graduated from high school and went to college. I met many foreign students in the university. These children, who come from the same place as those small immigrants, live a completely different life. They are also in league, but they live a more chic life. At first, I especially envied their chic. I think they are colorful and wonderful. They spend a lot of money, either going out for tea or singing K every night, and fighting back when shopping can cost me a month's living expenses a day. However, after spending some time with them, I began to dislike them. I think they are irresponsible, naive and ignorant, and they are not as lovely as those hardworking and down-to-earth immigrants. So I don't play with them either. But they don't play with me anymore They think I'm hypocritical
Then I haven't contacted anyone for a long time.
Then I made many new friends. Some of them are international students and some are immigrants. Most of my friends studying abroad look down on immigrants. Their thoughts were similar to mine. At the same time, they also think that those immigrants are too self-righteous. A friend of mine said indignantly, "What's the big deal? Didn't you come early? " ? Are you really Canadian? Besides, what are the advantages of being a Canadian? Look down on this and that, false lofty! "
Most of my immigrant friends say they look down on international students. Not surprisingly, they also think that these young international students are too extravagant, naive, irresponsible and ostentatious.
In other words, for the first time, I found that I had everything despised by both sides: being false and lofty, being too ostentatious. I suddenly feel very puzzled. I don't like this, I don't like that, and people don't like me. Maybe "I don't like it" itself is a subjective and meaningless joke. As such a contradictory person, I can't help but find the whole thing a little funny.
Human nature likes to hold groups. Holding a group gives us the advantage of survival. Before we were literate and just learned to use tools and make fires, we knew that only one tribe could unite and help each other every day to avoid being eaten by wild animals, freezing to death in winter and so on. In addition to our natural centripetal force, we also have repulsive force. Conflicts often occur between tribes for resources of one kind or another, and this nature has not changed after thousands of years in such a high-tech and civilized society. We still like to hold groups and get along with people who have something in common with us, which makes us feel safe. At the same time, we also like to exclude people who are different from ourselves, even if they only look different.
Yes, it just looks different. Although there are differences in personality, looks, hobbies, ideal tastes and the like between people, in the final analysis, we are all the same thing. The goal of our efforts is similar; Our path leads to the same goal. So racial discrimination is basically a human weakness. In foreign countries, the mutual exclusion between small immigrants and small international students is nothing more than a part of this weakness.
In the British Empire, where the mainstream society is all white, Chinese are actually a small percentage, with little resources and ability. Under such circumstances, it is a bit ridiculous to continue self-exclusion. If human beings are essentially one thing, then the difference between China people and China people is even smaller. As we have received the same type of education and our way of life follows the same culture, as an outsider living in such a country, I don't understand why we still don't like each other.
Small international students and small immigrants are human beings, both from China, with the same cultural background, regardless of family background. In other words, when they were born, they were no different from each other. If a young international student is left in Canada as a teenager, forcing him to experience cultural shock, emotional conflict between his parents and the pressure of life, and teaching him where to buy the cheapest food and how to buy the best things with the least money, he will also become an out-and-out so-called "small immigrant". This is also the case. Therefore, whenever my friends complain to me, I am always depressed. Although I understand their dislike, I can't understand why they can't overcome it.
There are indeed some foreign students who borrow money but don't pay it back, spend a lot of money on others, are duplicitous, like ghosts, feel good about themselves, eat to death and have no future. There are also some small immigrants who treat themselves as big dishes every day and look down on this and that. He is the cleverest in the world and the most promising on the earth. When he saw someone better than him, he tried to make things difficult for others. This is scum, scum is everywhere; People with bad personalities will appear in any race or small group. Where you throw this kind of person, let him (her) appear in what appearance, he (she) is scum. This has nothing to do with race or group. This is an individual difference, and we should understand this individual difference, not extend it to the whole group. Otherwise, you will not only make no progress all day long, but also make yourself angry to death.
