By the end of 2022, the permanent population of Sanming City was 2.455 million.

Sanming City, located in the northwest of Fujian Province, is a new industrial city, a national spiritual civilization city and one of the national health cities. During the period of 1993, it was approved by the State Council to be included in the coastal economic open zone.

It now governs Meilie and Sanyuan District, Yong 'an City 1, Datian, Youxi, Shaxian County, Mingxi County, Qingliu County, Ninghua County, Jiangle County, Taining County and Jianning County with a total land area of 22,900 square kilometers. Sanming has a subtropical maritime seasonal climate with an annual average temperature of 15- 19℃.

As early as the Paleolithic Age more than 10,000 years ago, there were traces of ancient human activities in Sanming, which was proved by the ancient human fossils found in Fox Cave in Qingliu County. Confucian scholars in Song Dynasty (Guishan), Luo Congyan and Zhu, Huang Shen, one of the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou" in Qing Dynasty, and Yi Bingshou, a great calligrapher, were all related to Sanming.

Topography and climate

The territory of Sanming City is dominated by middle and low hills, Wuyishan in the northwest, Wugui Mountain in the middle and Daiyun Mountain in the southeast. The mountains are lofty, the hills are undulating, the streams are densely covered, and the valleys and basins are interlaced. The terrain of the whole territory is generally high in the southwest and low in the northeast, with the highest elevation (Baishiding and Jianning)1.858m and the lowest elevation of 50m.
