What are the steps to apply for a design patent in New Zealand?

1. Submit an application

To apply for a New Zealand design patent, you need to provide the following materials to the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (hereinafter referred to as "IPONZ"):

-Display the design Product drawings or pictures (six-sided drawings):

-The name of the patent;

-Provide valid identity documents, the applicant is an organization, and a copy of the business license is required. The applicant is For individuals, a copy of your personal ID card is required;

- Provide the applicant's name, detailed address, contact information, designer's name and other information.

Generally, IPONZ will issue an application report 15 working days after receiving the application. If it is determined that the registration conditions are met, IPONZ will issue a review completion report; if there are problems, IPONZ will issue a review report stating the registration obstacles, and the applicant can complete the correction procedures within 12 months.

2. Authorization and disclosure

After the applicant receives the review completion report, IPONZ will issue a patent registration certificate to the applicant and record the process in the New Zealand Design Register. It usually takes 6 months. After completion, it will be published in the official IPONZ journal.

Note: After successful registration, a New Zealand design patent is valid for 15 years (from the date of application). Renewal fees need to be paid within six months after five years from the registration date and ten years after the registration date. Renewal is required, otherwise the registration will lose its validity, but the registered right holder can request to restore the registration within twelve months.
