Local kindergartens in Portugal are mainly private, but there are also a few public schools run by churches and municipal governments, which mainly take care of children from low-income families. These schools charge fees according to family income. Family per capita income is lower than the national standard, all free. Due to the limitation of places, public kindergartens generally do not accept children from high-income families.

Private kindergartens charge 300-600 euros a month. Its advantage is that students go to school for 2-3 hours longer than public schools (school time: 7:00-20:00), and there is a special car to pick up children. Private kindergartens are a better choice for double-income families with better economic conditions.
