The Historical Origin of Haimen Folk Songs

1955 Lu et al. adapted the narrative folk song "Rocking the Boat Lang" into the first folk drama "Taomi Ji", which was premiered by Zhongxing Town Amateur Troupe. 1956 participated in Haimen County Cultural Performance in the Spring Festival, and then was performed by Amateur Troupe. 1957 participated in performances in various cities and provincial capitals successively. 1958 In August, Haimen Folk Song Troupe was established. Up to now, the troupe has staged more than 200 plays, including more than 30 creative plays. Representative tracks include Taomi Ji, Picking Peaches, Two Daughters-in-law, Silver Flower Girl, Qinglong Jiao, Song for Mom and so on. 1In May 1993 and February 2002, Haimen Folk Song Troupe held two performances.

The performance scope of Haimen Mountain Opera includes not only Haimen, but also the whole Nantong area and the Wu dialect area in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai. Haimenshan Troupe is not only a professional opera group, but also a carrier for the spread of Haimen folk songs, a base for the development of folk songs and a talent pool for folk song actors.

In the mid-Qing dynasty, there were a large number of immigrants in Haimen area of the south of the Yangtze River, and the immigrants would be introduced into the sand area. Through the generations of several ordinary people in Haimen and other places, Haimen folk songs have developed successfully point by point.

In the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935), Guan Jiange and Ding Zhongguo collected Haimen folk songs and successfully compiled the Love Song of Jiangkou, which was published in Journal of Shanghai Daxia University and later edited into an album. In the second year, Guan Jiange collected a long narrative folk song "Matchmaker" and published it in Le Wuhan's "Heaven and Earth Man" magazine.

1949 After the liberation of China People's Liberation Army, local amateur performances were very active, and a variety of new folk songs were developed, which reflected the real life of ordinary people at that time, praised labor and love, and criticized various phenomena.

1954, Haimen folk songs were officially put on the stage.

In 1950s and 1960s, the first Haimen folk opera "Taomi Ji" edited and created by Lu et al. was welcomed by local people. Next, I participated in a performance in Nantong and Jiangsu Province.

1957 Taomi Ji participated in the national folk music and dance performance. The actors were received by Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and other central leaders, and took a group photo as a souvenir.

1958 In August, with the support of provincial and local governments, Haimen County Government formally established a professional Haimen Folk Song Troupe. Since then, Haimen Mountain Opera, as a new kind of drama, has aroused widespread concern.

In 1980s, a paper on the study of Jiaoguan folk songs was published in a journal at or above the provincial level.

1984, Haimen Folk Song Research Association was established.

1In August, 985, Haimen County held the first Haimen folk song concert. More than 50 singers sang more than 40 folk songs, which were reported by Guangming Daily and Xinhua Daily successively.

In 2007, Haimen folk songs entered the list of intangible cultural heritage protection in Jiangsu Province.
