Getting a green card is not helpful for applying for a university. But at least in order to compete with local students, there is no need to take the TOEFL and apply for a visa like international students. And getting a green card can give you more choices to apply for scholarships. But, on the other hand, you have to take the ACT/SAT like an American student. I can tell you that these two exams are definitely more difficult than TOEFL ... What you have to do now is to improve your vocabulary and reading speed, otherwise you won't get good grades and apply for a better university.
