S?o Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and one of the world’s megacities. Please briefly explain its formation process.
On January 25, 1554, the Jesuit missionary José de Anchieta celebrated Mass at the Seminary of St. Paul in the village of Piratininga (aldeia de Piratininga). In his letters to the church, he called this place "St. Paul's", from which St. Paul got his name. Located on the cliffs of Serra do Mar and the Rio Tietê, this area gradually became the natural entrance from the southeastern coast to the west, and eventually evolved into what is now the state of S?o Paulo. From the 17th to the 18th century, a group of explorers calling themselves the Bandeirantes (Pioneer Standard Bearers) traveled across Latin America in search of gold and diamonds. Through exploration and discovery, these people greatly expanded the territory of Brazil beyond the Line of Tordesillas to the borders of today's Brazil. To commemorate their contributions, many monuments have been erected, including the Monumento às Bandeiras, one of S?o Paulo's landmark buildings.
In 1711, St. Paul was officially established as a city. During the 19th century, S?o Paulo relied on the export of coffee from the Port of Santos and achieved economic prosperity. After 1881, Sao Paulo ushered in a wave of immigrants from Italy, Japan and other countries to the newly cultivated coffee farms. At the beginning of the 20th century, international coffee prices plummeted due to various factors, and the coffee trade began to become cheap. This prompted local entrepreneurs to devote themselves to the industrial development of Sao Paulo, and the development of industry allowed Sao Paulo to welcome a new group of immigrants.
Another important historical event is the establishment of the Law School of the University of S?o Paulo, which is jointly listed with the Recife Law School as the earliest academic institution in Brazil. The Academy was founded in 1828 in response to the growing demand for legal and political talent at the beginning of the Brazilian Empire. Initially it was housed in a monastery. As more and more wealthy Brazilians went to Europe to take legal courses, the then Emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro I, decided to develop it into a national law school. Since then it has begun to receive students from all over the country, who have added to the fresh and free lifestyle of Sao Paulo and become an important part of Sao Paulo's urban culture.
St. Paul gives people the impression of a very prosperous scene. Looking down at this modern South American city from an airplane, you will see row upon row of high-rise buildings, busy traffic on the wide roads, and the city's 64,000 streets criss-crossing each other, as dense as a spider's web. Many buildings in the urban area are as high as thirty or forty stories. For example, the Sao Paulo State Bank is 32 stories high, with a TV tower on the top of the building 160 meters high; the Italian Building is 41 stories high, with a restaurant and an observation deck on the top.
