Nianjun was a peasant uprising army in the north during the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Its members are mainly farmers and craftsmen, and they were active in the Feishui and Wohe river basins in northern Anhui in the early days. Up to now, there is a folk story in Guoyang county that reflects the Nian Army uprising in the late Qing Dynasty, which is called "Nian Army Story".

After the rise of the Nian Army, the leaders were Zhang Wang Luo Xing (Zhang Lexing) and Sun Kuixin. The origin of the name of Nianjun: Nian is Huaibei dialect, which means "a group". Thinking about the army comes from thinking about children.
