The Drug Research Institute is oriented towards finding and researching drugs to prevent and treat major diseases that seriously endanger people's health. It insists on focusing on the creation of new drugs with independent intellectual property rights. It is based on the research of Chinese herbal medicine and natural products and adopts modern medicine. Learn modern theories and high technologies to carry out multidisciplinary comprehensive research. The main directions of new drug research are anti-tumor drugs, drugs for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, drugs for neuropsychiatric diseases and anti-aging degenerative diseases, anti-hepatitis drugs, anti-inflammatory and immune drugs, anti-diabetic drugs, etc.

The Institute of Drug Research has a complete range of disciplines, including medicinal chemistry, natural product chemistry, pharmacology, drug safety evaluation, drug analysis, natural product biosynthesis, pharmaceutics and other research departments, and has strong new drug research and development ability. Especially in the fields of natural product research, computer-aided drug molecule design, combinatorial chemistry, molecular pharmacology, high-throughput screening and other fields, it has obvious characteristics. In addition, the Institute of Materia Medica also has the National Drug and Metabolite Analysis and Research Center, the National New Drug Development Engineering Technology Research Center, the National New Drug Screening Center, the Pharmacodynamics Platform of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the New Drug Safety Evaluation Center of the Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, and the Natural Resources Research Center of the Ministry of Health. Key Laboratory of Drug Biosynthesis, Key Laboratory of Material Basis of Chinese Herbal Medicine and Resource Utilization of the Ministry of Education, as well as its affiliated Beijing Union Medical College Factory, Beijing Union Medical College Second Pharmaceutical Factory, Peking Union Medical College Jianhao Pharmaceutical Technology Development Co., Ltd., and Beijing Kelebo Pharmaceutical Development Co., Ltd., Beijing Lianxin Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. The institute has formed a close integration of three major links: applied basic research – new drug development research – and industrialization of results. In the 50 years since its establishment, *** has won 247 scientific research achievement awards, developed more than 100 new drugs for sale, and obtained 124 new drug certificates, including 17 Category I new drugs. Since the establishment of the national fund system in 1986, *** has undertaken 785 scientific research projects of various types, published more than 5,678 papers, compiled 276 books, and has applied for 456 patents at home and abroad.

The Institute of Pharmacy is an important base for cultivating senior pharmaceutical talents in my country. The pharmacy discipline is a national key medical discipline recognized by the Ministry of Education, and has 4 doctoral degree authorization points and 5 master's degree authorization points. There is also a postdoctoral mobile station in pharmacy. The Institute of Materia Medica has a teaching team composed of senior scientific researchers. Over the past 50 years, there have been 46 doctoral supervisors and 144 master's supervisors approved by the state. They have undertaken the postgraduate teaching tasks of Peking Union Medical College and are open to postgraduate students. It has opened 21 courses in medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and other fields. Currently, there are more than 300 graduate students in the institute each year, and it has trained 371 doctoral students and 444 master's students.

In recent years, in the process of facing the market economy, accelerating the transformation of scientific research results, and improving industrial efficiency, the output value of pharmaceutical companies affiliated to and controlled by the Institute of Drug Research has increased year by year. The main products are: artificial musk, purpurin (paclitaxel injection), leucosporin injection, basanol, diphenyl diester, homoharringtonine, phthalocyanine, etc. Some of these drugs are exported to international markets.

The Institute of Materia Medica has conducted extensive scientific and technological cooperation and academic exchanges with pharmaceutical companies, universities, and scientific research institutions in China and more than 30 countries and regions, including Japan, the United States, Germany, and France, and has established close collaborative relationships. .

The Institute of Materia Medica is also responsible for editing and publishing three academic journals: "Acta Pharmaceutical Sciences", "Chinese Chemical Letters" and "Journal of Asian Natural Products Research".

2008 is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
