Sima Guang was born in Tianxi, Song Zhenzong for three years (A.D.1019117 October). At that time, his father Sima Chi was the county magistrate of Guangshan County, Gwangju, so he was named "Guang".

Sima Guang's distant ancestor can be traced back to Sima Fu, the royal family of the Western Jin Dynasty. Originally from Hanoi (now Qinyang, Henan). Sima Guang's father, Sima Chi, was a doctor in the Ministry of War, a servant in Tianzhangge (affiliated to Hanlin College) and an advisor to the emperor in the library, ranking fourth.

It has always enjoyed a high reputation for honesty and kindness. When Song Renzong was studying, he entered Longtuge with a bachelor's degree. In Song Shenzong, Wang Anshi carried out political reform, which was opposed by many people inside and outside the imperial court. Sima Guang is one of them.

After Wang Anshi's political reform, Sima Guang left the imperial court for fifteen years, and devoted himself to compiling "Lessons Learned from Mutual Learning", working hard and tirelessly. In his own words, "the sun is weak, and the night will follow."

At the end of the year, Song Renzong worked as a teacher in Tianzhangge, determined to compile Tongzhi as a reference for feudal rule. In the third year of Zhiping (1066), it was written into eight volumes from the Warring States to the Qin Dynasty, and Yingzong ordered a bureau to continue it.

Zong Shen gave it the name "Purple Tongzhi Sword". When Wang Anshi adopted the New Deal, he strongly opposed it and argued with Anshi in front of the emperor, emphasizing that the laws of his ancestors could not be changed. He was appointed as the deputy special envoy of the Committee, but he refused to resign. The following year, he retired to Luoyang and continued to compile Tong Jian.

Written in the seventh year of Yuanfeng (1084). From the beginning to the last edition, he wrote it himself. In the eighth year of Yuanfeng, Song Zhezong acceded to the throne. Empress Dowager Gao listened to politics and called her into Beijing to preside over state affairs. The following year, he served as a servant of Shangshu and a disciple.
